Surprising foods that can be used in haircare that I love

I love using items in my kitchen for haircare. More often than not, I have found them to be budget-friendly and effective in my haircare routine. Some items didn’t really work as expected but I do believe in trying something at least once to see if it will be beneficial for you.

It is important to know your hair porosity (refers to how open or closed the cuticle layer is, which is the outermost layer of hair) to be able to choose what will work for you. Doing a hair porosity test is very simple. Take a few strands of hair in a glass of tap water. High porosity is so open; the hair will quickly absorb water and then sink to the bottom of the cup. Low porosity hair is water-resistant, which means the strands will remain floating towards the surface even after a few minutes.

What does Low/High porosity mean?

Low Porosity: It means the structure of your hair doesn’t easily allow moisture to be absorbed into your hair shaft. This can make it harder for water to saturate your hair when it’s washed. This type of hair is usually considered healthy, and is often very shiny, especially when it’s dark in color. Choose lighter, liquid-based products such as hair milk that won’t sit on your hair and leave it oily or greasy.

High Porosity: It can be either an inherent property of hair or the result of damage from chemical processing or rough treatment. Highly porous hair can also lose moisture easily, it’s important to use leave-in conditioners, moisturizers, and sealers. Layering these products will help your hair hold on to the moisture you’re giving it.

What foods can you use in natural haircare?

1. Mayonnaise

Mayonnaise adds shine and strengthens hair from root to tip. It is one of the best deep-conditioning hair treatments. It is high in protein, has added lemon juice, vinegar, and soybean oil which contain fatty acids and vitamins that can boost shine and act to seal in moisture and prevent breakage.

Mayonnaise is considered a protein treatment and not suitable for low porosity hair since it is very protein sensitive so it’s best to stay away from products containing protein as it could make your hair feel very brittle and hard.

2. Ripe Banana or Banana Baby food (purity)

Bananas are rich in potassium, natural oils, carbohydrates, and vitamins B6 and C, which help soften the hair and protect the hair’s natural elasticity, preventing split ends and breakage. They are great for hair and scalp while helping control dandruff. This is a firm favorite in my haircare routine. If used as a deep conditioner can leave hair as soft as a cotton ball. Be sure to blend your ripe bananas very well to avoid them sticking on your hair. I prefer purity as it is less messy and works just as well.

3. Avocado

Avocados are extremely moisturizing and nourishing because they contain natural oils. They are rich in rich in omega-3 fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins A, B2, D, and E, beta-carotene, and minerals like copper and iron that can nourish the scalp and help hair look healthy, shiny, and hydrated. It helps repair damage by conditioning and providing your hair with the essential nutrients it needs to stay healthy.

4. Onions and garlic

When added to the hair and scalp, onion juice can provide extra sulfur to support strong and thick hair, thus preventing hair loss and promoting hair growth.

Raw garlic is known to be rich in vitamin C content that is great for promoting healthy hair. It also boosts collagen production that helps stimulate hair growth.

These two are not the best smelling when applied on hair but very effective for promoting hair growth.

5. Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar-based rinse is very popular in haircare and can help restore life to your hair. It is great at getting build-up out of your hair due to its acidic nature. It rinses unwanted dirt off your hair strands and restores pH balance. It can also prevent bacteria growth on the scalp, as well as the population of dandruff.


6. Plain yogurt

It leaves hair feeling soft, adds extra shine, and provides extra moisture to moisture lost hair. Yogurt makes hair easier to detangle, helps fight frizz in warm and humid months. Can promote hair growth due to the zinc and lactic acid when massaged into the scalp. The probiotics are also great for a healthy scalp. Just make sure you rinse very thoroughly or your hair will smell like vomit.

7. Coconut Oil

8. Olive oil

Olive oil is a fantastic conditioner for hair. It is most beneficial for dry, thick hair and can keep hair moist and strong. Olive oil tends to weigh down thinner hair though. Heavily processed hair — like hair that’s been treated with relaxers, perms, or bleach — especially benefit from extra moisture. Olive oil can help smooth the broken or burned ends of your hair.

9. Aloe vera

The best form of aloe vera to use on your hair is the raw gel of the plant. You can buy this gel in almost any pharmacy or scoop it out of leaves cut fresh from a live plant if you have one. The gel is clear in color and slightly watery.

Aloe vera’s natural enzymes destroy the excessive dead skin cells and fungus that leads to dandruff while also leaving the scalp’s pH level balanced and hair moisturized.  Rubbing aloe vera into your scalp and hair and letting it penetrate your hair follicles could condition and improve damaged, dry hair. It also promotes hair growth, prevents itching on the scalp, reduces dandruff, and conditions your hair.

10. Honey

Honey has both emollient and humectant properties, making it a great hair moisturizer. Emollients smooth the hair follicles, adding shine to dull hair. Humectants bond with water molecules, adding moisture to dry strands. By moisturizing and locking in shine, honey can help restore the natural luster of your hair. Honey has enzymatic and also antioxidant properties that have been known to aid in the treatment of dry and itchy scalp, and dandruff.

There are many more foods and home remedies for haircare that I have tried, I am just grateful that I still have hair on my head and have not had any disasters that could not be rectified.
